Foot Care Basics

Everyone – men, women, and children – should visit a foot doctor like Dr. Boris Abramov and Dr. Tatyana Abramova annually. Regular examination by a podiatrist is the best way to identify any current or potential problems. With years of specialized training and experience, your podiatrist is the best-qualified medical professional to care for this part of your body and to make recommendations for treatment and ongoing care.

But what can you do to take care of your feet and ensure foot health in between office visits? Plenty! Here are four foot care basics tips from Boris Abramov, DPM and Tatyana Abramova, DPM to help you keep your feet in great shape, able to support your body without pain as you move through your day:

1.      Wash your feet daily with antibacterial soap. Dry them well, especially between the toes. These simple steps will protect you from plantar warts, athlete’s foot, toenail fungus, and other contagious infections.

2.      Don’t share shoes. You never know what could be living in someone else’s footwear. Similarly, if you enjoy a periodic yoga class, invest in your own mat. Those studio mats are used by numerous students every week…and they’re all barefoot.

3.      Limit your time in high heels. They are tied to bunions, hammertoes, and other issues. Instead, choose a sensible, comfortable pair for everyday use and save the fashion footwear for special occasions.

4.      Inspect your feet regularly. This is especially important for people with diabetes, who often live with a dangerous combination of increased risk of illness and injury and decreased sensation caused by diabetes-related neuropathy. Look at your feet daily and report any changes to your podiatrist. If it’s hard to see your feet, ask a family member to help or place a small mirror on the floor and use it to see your feet.

If you notice changes to the appearance of your feet or experience discomfort between annual visits to your podiatrist, you should schedule another visit right away. This is the best step you can take to ensure good foot health throughout your lifetime.
