Choosing Summer Sandals

Are you in the market for a new pair of open summer shoes? Now is a great time to go shopping, as many stores and internet retailers are offering new items, and many at a discount. But how can you be sure that the pair you choose will help you protect foot health in the coming months? Here are some tips from Boris Abramov, DPM and Tatyana Abramova, DPM to help guide your selection:

1.      Choose the right size. Foot size changes as you age. If it’s been more than a year since your feet were last measured, head to your favorite brick-and-mortar store and ask a staff member to measure your feet using a Brannock device. This is the best way to make sure you’re buying the right size. Don’t be surprised to learn that your feet are two slightly different sizes; many people’s are. If this is the case, buy shoes to fit the larger foot.

2.      Make sure that your new shoes are comfortable. That seems so obvious but at Abramov’s Comprehensive Foot Care we often see patients who have sustained foot or ankle injury as a result of choosing appearance over comfort in footwear. Choose a pair of sandals that offer excellent arch support, plenty of room for your toes, and rubber soles to reduce your risk of falling.

3.      Straps, straps, straps! A pair of flip-flops or slides is fine for an occasional day at the beach or the pool but, for everyday wear, make sure that your sandals have straps around the backs of your heels to keep them in place. Adjustable straps across the tops of the feet will enable you to customize fit and allow for a foot deformity such as a bunion.

Remember: You’ll be wearing your sandals without socks to add an additional layer of protection between your feet and the world around them. Stay safe from foot odor and infections including plantar warts by airing your sandals out overnight and spraying them periodically with an antibacterial product such as Lysol.

The best thing you can do to keep feet looking and feeling great is to visit a board-certified podiatrist like Dr. Boris Abramov and Dr. Tatyana Abramova regularly. With years of specialized training and experience, your foot doctor is the best-qualified professional to care for this part of your body.
