Women Have Unique Bodies and Unique Foot Health Issues

Most women are accustomed to seeing physicians who are able to treat their unique health needs, but do you know that women have foot health issues all their own as well? They do! One in three women over the age of 65 has foot pain or stiffness and younger women suffer as well. If you are female, it’s important to see a podiatrist like Dr. Boris Abramov and Dr. Tatyana Abramova who is equipped to diagnose and treat women.

The single most common cause of foot discomfort in women is poorly-fitting shoes, especially those with high heels and pointy toe boxes. These usually come with slippery soles and little to no support. Regular use over a long period of time can lead to a wide range of painful issues including:

  • stress fractures

  • bunions and bunionettes, a deformity of the toes

  • corns and calluses on the toes and the sole of the foot

  • ingrown toenails

  • Haglund’s deformity, a painful bony protrusion at the back of the heel

  • Morton’s neuroma, an irritation of the nerves between the third and fourth toe that leads to unpleasant tingling and burning sensations

  • plantar fasciitis, an irritation of the soft tissue on the bottom of the foot

  • arthritis, particularly hallux rigidus, which creates pain and limited range of motion in the big toe

If you wear high heels every day, please consider making a change. Reserve those shoes for special occasions. Instead, for daily use, choose a pair of comfortable shoes with a roomy toe box, chunky low heel, and non-skid soles.
